The free build is the whole application.
Same binary, same physics, same solver as every paid seat. A licence removes the limits — it does not unlock features, because there are no features held back.

What the free tier limits
Stated specifically, so you can decide before installing rather than after.
| Mesh size | 250,000 cells of fluids; 100,000 nodes of solid |
|---|---|
| Solver cores | Single core |
| Analysis types | All of them. The free tier is limited by scale, not by physics |
| Cell zones | Available — MRF, AMI, overset, porous media and sources |
| Remote execution | Not available |
| Report export | Watermarked |
| Support | Docs and community |
250,000 cells is a real mesh — enough for 2D studies, coarse 3D external aero and most teaching work. It is not enough for a converged 3D production run, which is the honest reason to pay.
System requirements
Windows and Linux today — macOS is coming.
| Operating system | Windows 10 or 11, or a 64-bit Linux with glibc 2.35+ (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, RHEL 9) |
|---|---|
| Memory | 8 GB minimum, 16 GB recommended for meshes past ~2M cells |
| Disk | ~4 GB for the application and its bundled solver, plus your cases |
| Graphics | Anything with OpenGL 3.3 — the viewport is not GPU-hungry |
The installer downloads OpenFOAM v2606 while it runs — you choose the physics you want and it fetches only those solvers, which is why the installer itself is small. You do not need WSL, a separate OpenFOAM install, or a Linux machine. Once fetched, the solver runs offline forever. A macOS build of the application itself is on the way — the solver already runs on both, so this is packaging work rather than a port.
