SHD Sim Explicit
Events too fast for an implicit solver
The right tool for events no implicit solver can touch — milliseconds, large deformation, contact everywhere, and no equilibrium to iterate towards.
This module is available.
Runs on your machine only.
What it runs on
Established open-source solvers, bundled or provisioned — the same approach as the CFD module, where the case for paying is the hours the interface saves rather than a solver nobody else has.
OpenRadioss
The whole module, run locally on your own machine. AGPL-3.0
Analysis types
7 of them, in 2 groups, each with the backend that serves it. Naming the backend per row is deliberate: it is what tells you whether a capability is a setting away or a different solver entirely.
Impact and shock
Short, violent events where the structure is far past yield and contact changes every step. An implicit solver has no equilibrium to converge towards here.
| Analysis type | Backend | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Impact and crash | OpenRadioss | Vehicle and structural crash |
| Drop test | OpenRadioss | Product and packaging drop |
| Blast and shock | OpenRadioss | Air blast and shock loading |
| Penetration / ballistics | OpenRadioss | Perforation and residual velocity |
Manufacturing and abuse
The same solver, aimed at forming processes and at making something fail on purpose.
| Analysis type | Backend | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sheet-metal forming and stamping | OpenRadioss | Springback, thinning, formability |
| Battery crush and abuse | OpenRadioss | Mechanical abuse testing |
| Explicit fluid-structure interaction | OpenRadioss | Coupled inside the explicit solver |
What you would use it for
Written as questions because that is how the work arrives. Nobody sets out to run a modal analysis; they set out to find whether the thing will resonate.
Does it survive a one-metre drop?
Explicit drop test with real contact, at the timescale where the structure is far past yield and an implicit solver has no equilibrium to find.
How does this crush, and does it protect the occupant?
Progressive crush against a barrier, with the energy absorbed at each stage.
Does the pack survive intrusion?
Battery crush and mechanical abuse, which is a regulatory question as much as an engineering one.
Will the panel form without tearing?
Sheet-metal forming with springback and thinning, so the tool is right before it is cut.
