SHD Sim EM
Eddy currents / AC magnetics
Losses, skin effect, shielding

In development.
This module is phase 3 — after structural and thermal. The solver behind it is chosen and its capability is known. SHD Sim is available today.
What it is
An alternating field induces currents in conductors, which oppose the field that made them. The result is skin effect, proximity effect and loss, and the skin depth sets everything, falling with the square root of frequency until the current runs in a thin surface shell.
What this analysis needs from you
- Conductivity and permeability
- An excitation frequency, or a spectrum of them
- A mesh resolving the skin depth, which is what makes these models expensive
Typical uses
- Transformer and inductor loss at frequency
- Cable and busbar AC resistance
- Magnetic shielding effectiveness against frequency
- Induction machine rotor losses
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Transformers & inductors
- Induction devices
- Shielding design
- Non-destructive testing
What comes out
- Eddy current distribution
- AC losses at frequency
- Skin and proximity effects
- Shielding effectiveness

Status
Phase 3 — after structural and thermal. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
