SHD Sim EM

Electric machines

Torque, cogging, losses

Elmer

In development.

This module is phase 3 — after structural and thermal. The solver behind it is chosen and its capability is known. SHD Sim is available today.

What it is

Torque against rotor position, which is where cogging, ripple and back-EMF all come from. It is a rotating magnetic problem solved at many positions, so the output is a curve rather than a value, and the shape of that curve is what the machine feels like in use.

What this analysis needs from you

  • Full machine geometry including slots and magnets
  • A winding definition and drive currents
  • Many rotor positions, which multiplies the run count

Typical uses

  • Permanent magnet motor design and cogging reduction
  • Traction motor efficiency mapping
  • Generator design and back-EMF waveform
  • Comparing slot and pole combinations

Industries

Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.

  • Traction & EV
  • Industrial drives
  • Aerospace actuation
  • Appliances

What comes out

  • Torque versus rotor position
  • Cogging and ripple
  • Back-EMF waveforms
  • Loss and efficiency maps

Backend

Elmer

Chosen for this analysis type, with its capability verified against the module plan — not decided later.

Status

Phase 3 — after structural and thermal. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
