Fracture mechanics
J-integral, X-FEM crack propagation
code_aster
In development.
What it is
Assumes a crack is already there and asks whether it grows. The J-integral or stress intensity factor at the crack tip is compared against the material's toughness; X-FEM lets the crack propagate through the mesh without remeshing around it. This is the discipline behind fitness-for-service assessment.
What this analysis needs from you
- A crack definition — location, size and orientation, which is an input not an output
- Fracture toughness for the material and temperature
- code_aster
Typical uses
- Fitness-for-service for equipment with known flaws
- Inspection interval setting from crack growth rate
- Failure investigation, working back from a fracture surface
- Leak-before-break arguments
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Oil & gas
- Aerospace
- Power generation
- Structural integrity
What comes out
- Stress intensity factors
- Crack growth per cycle
- Critical crack sizes
- Inspection interval basis

Status
Phase 2 — the next module after CFD. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
