Buckling
Linear eigenvalue, and post-buckling via nonlinear static
code_aster
In development.
What it is
A slender structure can fail well below its yield stress by going unstable. Linear eigenvalue buckling gives the critical load factor and the shape it collapses into, cheaply. It is optimistic by construction — real structures have imperfections — so the eigenvalue is an upper bound, and nonlinear post-buckling is what tells you the real one.
What this analysis needs from you
- A linear static case first — buckling solves against its stress state
- A restraint set that does not accidentally prevent the buckling mode
- For a real answer, an imperfection amplitude and a nonlinear run
Typical uses
- Columns, struts and long slender members
- Thin-walled vessels under external pressure
- Panels in compression or shear
- Checking whether a lightweight frame is light enough to be unstable
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Steel construction
- Aerospace structures
- Pressure vessels
- Masts & towers
What comes out
- Critical load factors
- Buckling mode shapes
- Imperfection sensitivity indication
- Governing member identification

Status
Phase 2 — the next module after CFD. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
