Modal / eigenfrequency
Natural frequencies and mode shapes
code_aster
In development.
What it is
Natural frequencies and the shapes that go with them, with no load applied at all — it is a property of the structure, not of what you do to it. Cheap, fast, and very often the first question worth asking, because a resonance found on screen is far less expensive than one found on a test rig.
What this analysis needs from you
- Density as well as stiffness — mass matters here in a way it does not for static
- A restraint set that matches how it is actually mounted
- A frequency range or a mode count worth extracting
Typical uses
- Checking a structure against a known excitation frequency
- Rotating equipment: staying off a running speed
- Deciding where to stiffen, from the mode shape
- A sanity check on a model, since a wrong stiffness or mass shows up immediately
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Rotating machinery
- Automotive NVH
- Aerospace
- Electronics packaging
What comes out
- Natural frequencies
- Mode shapes
- Mass participation per mode
- Frequency margins to excitation

Chosen for this analysis type, with its capability verified against the module plan — not decided later.
Status
Phase 2 — the next module after CFD. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
