Welding / residual stress
Thermo-metallurgical-mechanical
code_aster
In development.
What it is
A weld leaves stress behind after everything has cooled, because the metal melted, shrank on solidifying and was restrained by the parts around it. Modelling it means following the heat source along the joint, tracking the phase changes and accumulating the plastic strain — thermal, metallurgical and mechanical at once.
What this analysis needs from you
- A moving heat source description matching the process
- Temperature-dependent material data well past yield
- code_aster, and patience — these are among the most expensive analyses here
Typical uses
- Distortion prediction before cutting expensive plate
- Residual stress in pressure equipment weld procedures
- Deciding whether post-weld heat treatment is needed
- Fatigue assessment where residual stress shifts the mean
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Shipbuilding
- Pressure vessels
- Steel construction
- Pipelines
What comes out
- Residual stress field around the weld
- Distortion of the welded assembly
- Sequence comparison
- Regions needing relief
Backend

Chosen for this analysis type, with its capability verified against the module plan — not decided later.
Status
Phase 2 — the next module after CFD. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
