SHD Sim Thermal
Conjugate heat transfer
Fluid and solid in one solver, preferred over coupling
OpenFOAM chtMultiRegionFoam
In development.
What it is
Fluid and solid solved together in one solver, with temperature and heat flux continuous across every interface. It removes the heat transfer coefficient entirely because the flow computes it, which is why it is the honest answer whenever the fluid behaviour is part of the question.
What this analysis needs from you
- A multi-region mesh with matched or mapped interfaces
- Fluid and solid properties both
- More compute than either problem alone, and a longer run to settle
Typical uses
- Electronics cooling, board and air together
- Heat exchanger cores
- Engine cooling jackets
- Any case where a guessed heat transfer coefficient would decide the answer
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Electronics cooling
- Power electronics
- Automotive
- Energy systems
What comes out
- Coupled fluid and solid temperatures
- Real heat transfer coefficients
- Hot spots under actual airflow
- Cooling option comparison

Status
Phase 2–3 — largely arrives with structural. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
