Joule heating
Electric current to heat, coupled internally
Elmer
In development.
What it is
Current through a resistive material dissipates power, and the power density follows the current density, so heating concentrates wherever current crowds. Solved with the electrical problem rather than after it, because conductivity changes with temperature and the two feed back.
What this analysis needs from you
- Electrical conductivity, ideally temperature-dependent
- A current or voltage boundary condition
- A thermal boundary condition, since the heat has to leave somewhere
Typical uses
- Busbar and connector heating at rated current
- PCB trace and via current capacity
- Resistive heating element design
- Fuse and protection device behaviour
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Busbars & switchgear
- PCB & interconnect
- Heating elements
- Battery systems
What comes out
- Temperature rise at rated current
- Current crowding locations
- Derating guidance
- Contact and neck hot spots

Status
Phase 2–3 — largely arrives with structural. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
