SHD Sim Thermal
Induction heating
AC magnetics to heat
Elmer
In development.
This module is phase 2–3 — largely arrives with structural. The solver behind it is chosen and its capability is known. SHD Sim is available today.
What it is
An alternating field induces eddy currents in a workpiece, and those currents heat it. The heating concentrates in a skin whose depth falls as frequency rises, which is what makes the process controllable: frequency chooses how deep you heat.
What this analysis needs from you
- Magnetic permeability, often nonlinear, and electrical conductivity
- Coil geometry and excitation frequency
- A mesh that resolves the skin depth, which can be very fine
Typical uses
- Induction hardening of gears and shafts
- Billet heating before forging
- Induction brazing and soldering
- Choosing a coil geometry and frequency together
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- Heat treatment
- Forging & forming
- Brazing & joining
- Food processing
What comes out
- Heating pattern in the workpiece
- Skin depth at frequency
- Time to temperature
- Coil option comparison

Status
Phase 2–3 — largely arrives with structural. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
