SHD Sim Thermal
Convection boundary
h and T-infinity, or a multi-layer wall resistance
code_aster / Elmer
In development.
This module is phase 2–3 — largely arrives with structural. The solver behind it is chosen and its capability is known. SHD Sim is available today.
What it is
A surface losing heat to a fluid that is not modelled, represented by a heat transfer coefficient and a bulk temperature. It is an assumption standing in for a flow solution: cheap, often good enough, and the weakest number in the model.
What this analysis needs from you
- A heat transfer coefficient, from correlation, test or judgement
- A bulk fluid temperature
- An honest view on whether the coefficient is defensible; if it is not, solve the fluid instead
Typical uses
- Natural-convection losses from a hot surface
- Forced cooling where the flow is well characterised
- Multi-layer wall resistance in building fabric
- A first pass before deciding whether conjugate heat transfer is worth it
Industries
Sectors where this analysis is routinely asked for.
- HVAC equipment
- Electronics cooling
- Automotive
- Industrial ovens
What comes out
- Surface temperatures under film conditions
- Sensitivity to the assumed coefficient
- Heat balance per face
- Where CHT is actually needed

Status
Phase 2–3 — largely arrives with structural. Telling us you need this analysis moves it up the order — modules are sequenced by who is waiting for them.
