The thickness of the element against the face itself. This is the number that decides whether the layer resolves anything; the two below only decide how far it reaches before handing over to the bulk mesh.

How many. Enough that the last one is comparable to the surrounding element size — a stack that stops abruptly at a tenth of it leaves a jump the mesher has to absorb in one element.

The ratio between one layer and the next. Between 1.1 and 1.3 is the usual range; much above that and the jump from the last layer to the bulk is as abrupt as having no layers at all.
